When you are exhausted, lonely and isolated, whether it is your first baby, or
fifth, it can be really hard to keep a rational perspective on your problems. You can
feel as if you are the only one who gone through this and just want to give up. You
may say to yourself: "What is my problem? Why aren't other moms struggling the
way I do?" and...

"How do they look so happy and perfect?"

This question is legitimate and the answers may surprise you.
The truth is
most mothers feel inadequate and unsuccessful on a regular basis. ALL mothers
look good some of the time and ALL mothers have periods of loneliness and
insecurity.

You may not believe this, but you are the perfect mother for your child.
Deep inside, you really know what to do. What you probably need are just a few
things to be confident that you are a good mother.

Here is what you get in the New Baby New Paltz Community:

  • Mother to Mother support -- It can be a sanity saver. Just knowing: "I am
not the only one!" causes a huge release in tension. Most of us were not
raised in a community where we observed babies being mothered. When you
sit in a circle of peers, you hear their experiences and it usually makes you feel
more reassured that you are doing a good job.

  • Some new friends. Most of us worked in Not-So-Baby-Friendly environ-
ments when we were pregnant. You may have some great friends, but odds
are they don't have babies the same age as yours. As you have probably
come to find, your old friends don't get "It."

  • Some explanation of basic baby behaviors that may help you save you
and your baby a lot of irritation with each other. Chances are, you never
learned the basics of babyhood. What is normal? What should you expect at
each age? Your baby gets to meet other babies in the same age range and
you get a feel for what is normal, and what is not.

We offer lots of information, support and encouragement. Each group has a
topic for discussion, time for sharing successes and time for problems that you
need help with. If you need breastfeeding help, it's included. We encourage you to
connect with each other after the meeting with a walk or lunch.

Can't make this week's meeting? Maybe your baby's sick or napping? How
disappointing! ...and we'll be here next week. Some working moms schedule their
well-baby appointments for before or after a group. If you have a newborn and
need breastfeeding help, but are concerned about germs, come, I have a private
room just for you!

Here's why I care about New Baby New Paltz:
I started mothering with an unexpected cesarean, postpartum depression, a
high-need baby and a full-time business. It was the support and encouragement
from my peers in La Leche League and International Cesarean Awareness Network
that got me through.

I have been a La Leche League Leader since 1998 and became a Board Certified
Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in 2010. I started New Baby New Paltz because I want
other new moms to have a place to go to meet other mothers and babies. My kids
are older now and I have a different perspective on new babies. It doesn't last
forever...even though it may seem like it will. It does get easier and the things you
learn about your baby hold true as your child grows.
I love this group and I hope you do, too!

Dear Donna-

This week's newsletter was
picture perfect.

Somehow you know just what to
say at just the right time.  We've
been discussing how and when
we want to start to transition
feel like I've read every book
and listened to every advice out
there but yours rings truest and
we've been taking it day by day
(or night by night). It's nice to
have your thoughts reinforced,
with "Hey, you've got the idea"!

Thanks so much!
Love,
Amy
